Ancestors of William D. Wood

Generation One

1. William D.1 WOOD was born circa 1794 at Cornwallis, Kings Co, Nova Scotia.1,2 He married Olivia Hovey Williams, daughter of Joseph ? Williams, on 23 Oct 1817 at St Paul's Anglican Church, Rawdon, Hants Co, Nova Scotia. He died on 29 May 1866 at Gardner's Creek, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; "On the 29th instant at his residence, Gardner's Creek, after a short but severe illness, Mr. William H. Wood, in the 72nd year of his age, a native of Cornwallis, N.S., and for the last 38 years a resident of this Province. He leaves a large circle of relatives and friends."
His obituary listed him as William H. Wood, rather than William D. Wood. This writer has no idea if this was a mistake at the newspaper.3,4 He was buried at Brown's Cemetery, Bain's Corner, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.5
William Wood's early life remains a mystery at this point. No information has been located to prove his parentage, and nothing is known before his marriage in 1817, or, for that matter, until the family moved to New Brunswick ca 1825. One descendant, Allene P. Steves of Hillsborough, N.B., mentioned in a letter dated 6 September 1982 to this writer that she was told William Wood had been appointed to guide a band of settlers from Nova Scotia to New Brunswick and that he liked the country so well he decided to move there as well. Although the marriage of William and Olivia took place in Rawdon, Hants County, Nova Scotia, there is little substantiating evidence that either of their families were of that area. It is possible though that William was the son of Marbel Wood and his wife Rebecca Rawlins who died at Rawdon in 1813. Much more research is needed in this area!
The marriage record itself mentions that they were married with consent of guardians, rather than parents, leading one to think that possibly both had lost their parents by that time, or at least one of them. Birth records for their first three children have yet to be located in any towns in Nova Scotia.
On 21 October 1850, William and Olivia sold 105 3/4 acres land in the parish of Simonds to their son, Joseph Williams Wood, for the sum of five shillings "as well as other considerations of love and affection". This land was sold by the heirs of John Dewar to William Wood and William Benjamin " and by them divided on the thirteenth day September instant". On 17 September 1861, William and Olivia sold 40 acres to Joseph Williams Wood for forty pounds. It is probable that they turned their farm over to Joseph because they were to remain with him for their final years.
Both William Wood and son Joseph Wood are listed in the 1865-1866 directory as of Gardner's Creek. Sometime in the late 1870's, Joseph probably sold the properties in Gardner's Creek and moved to Saint John. Further research of land records is needed in this area to verify the date.
If William Wood was born in Cornwallis, the Loyalist settlement of Cornwallis was situated in the Northeast corner of what is now Kings County, including Cape Blomidon. Present villages include Glenmont and Canning. Horton was south of Cornwallis to the Hants County, Falmouth Township line.6 He and Olivia Hovey Williams appeared on the census of 1851 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; William D. Wood, 58, b. Nova Scotia, farmer, entered the colony in 1826; Olivia was 60, b. Nova Scotia, also entering in 1826; His children were listed as native born: Joseph, 25, Olivia, 22, Hannah, 18, and Sarah Maria, 16. Also living with them was Alexander Cameron, 10, Scotch, who entered in 1847.

The family had 12 acres of land, and had raised 6 tons of hay, 12 bushel oats, 12 ushels bk'wheat, 1 bushel Indian corn and 100 bales of potatoes.7

Olivia Hovey WILLIAMS was born circa 1791 at Nova Scotia.8,9 She died circa 1872 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick.10 She was buried in 1872 at Brown's Cemetery, Bain's Corner, Saint John Co., New Brunswick.11 Family tales have always stipulated with great emphasis that Olivia was descended from Roger Williams of Providence, Rhode Island. Much research has taken place and this cannot yet be confirmed. Yet, every known branch that could be found - no matter what end of the continent - had heard the story back from the 1880's and 1900, perhaps earlier. My own grandmother, back in the 1930's had a huge framed print depicting Roger Williams over the sofa.
This family has been well documented for many years, and yet, nothing has surfaced to substantiate the claim. So at this point, you will find neither an acceptance of the claim nor a denial. Time will tell.
This writer believes that Olivia Hovey Williams was a daughter of the Rev. Joseph Williams and Hannah Hovey who married 2 Jan 1770 at Horton, NS, or perhaps even the daughter of their eldest son Charles who was born 13 May 1771.
I will not connect this family to them, as I have NO evidence other than what can be drawn from names and places to establish this as fact. I do believe this to be the line, however.

"Mrs. Nathan Benjamin, a widow, about 50 years of age was burned to death Saturday night when her home at Gardners Creek, near St Martins, about 25 miles outside Saint John was destroyed by fire. She had been left alone in the house and her death was not discovered until the fire burned itself out. A search of the ruins disclosed charred bones lying near what had the bottom of the stairway.
Mrs. Benjamin's two sons and daughter, who were living at the house, were away from home for the evening. On their return about 10:30 PM they saw the fire and rushed to their home. By then the house was a little more than a burning heap of wood. The roof and walls having given away. When they could not find her they figured she may have wondered off into the woods, then the charred bones were discovered. It is believed she was on her way up the stairs to extinguish the fire but fell and had been overcome by smoke just a few feet from the front door.
Mrs. Benjamin had two daughters living in Saint John, Mrs. Ralph Hatfield (Mary Elizabeth), and Miss Estelle Benjamin, with J. Willard Smith's family; and one brother Daniel Jackson, 9 Hospital Street. They were all called yesterday to Gardner's Creek after word of the tragedy was received. Sargeant-Detective John T. Power drove to Gardner's Creek to view the scene of death and will return there this morning with coroner H.A. Porter, for an investigation.
The house was situated on Fairfield Road in an isolated postion. A factor that was probably responsible for the fire getting a big headway was the lateness of the hour, most of the neighbors being asleep. The origin of the blaze is unknown. Mrs. Benjamin has been a subject to fainting spells and it is believed that she may have taken one of these at the time of the fire and had been overcome by the smoke before recovering".169 She was buried at Brown's Cemetery, Bain's Corner, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.170 She witnessed the marriage of William Charles Wood and Esther MacDonald on 21 Mar 1893 at F.C.
