Descendants of Daniel Tryon

Generation One

1. DANIEL1 TRYON was born circa 1739 at Connecticut. He married Ellenor Vaughan, daughter of Benjamin Vaughan and Rose (--?--), before 1762; While we know that the Vaughans lived in New Fairfield, and so did Daniel Tryon at one point, that whole area is lacking good records. Quaker Hill, New York was very close and records are almost non-existant. It is no surprise that so much is missing on these families.1 He died after 1795 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.
It is the opinion (1990) of this writer that this Daniel Tryon was the Daniel Tryon b. 21 Oct 1739 Wethersfield, Connecticut, son of Benjamin Tryon and Rebecca Hurlbut in the "Hurlbut Genealogy". However, the Barbour Collection of Connecticut Vital Records lists this same birthdate for a David Tryon, son of the above mentioned. Further investigation is needed in the original records of this area to provide a solid background for our Daniel Tryon, although the town record did, in fact, reflect David, not Daniel, as this writer had hoped, for the son of Benjamin and Rebecca.2 There is little evidence to the life of Daniel Tryon other than several land documents. The list of petitioners, dated 22 Jan 1760 shows Daniel "Troyon" along with 39 others, including Joseph and William Vaughn, and Zaccheus Towner. He appears again on a petition dated 11 Feb 1760, and 31 Mar 1762. A land patent dated 20 May 1762 in the town of Queensbury, NY lists him among 22 grantees headed by Daniel Prindle, coming out of Connecticut. It is more than likely this is our Daniel Tryon as several others named, iincluding Samuel Hungerford and Amos Leach, were also of New Fairfield, Connecticut in 1763. A great many of these grantees never actually settled there. Many took up in Vermont. Another fact tying this Daniel into the family is that Zacheus Towner was the surveyor for the individual land plots, and -- of course, also our Daniel Tryon's brother-in-law, since Ellenor Vaughan and Zacheus' wife Sarah were sisters, and that they ended up in Noyan as well. That's enough proof for this writer.3,4,1 Land records definitely associated with our subject can be located at the Bennington County Courthouse. The first record dated 19 Aug 1766 involved James Babcock of Shaftsbury selling 100 acres, called Lot #56 "of ye first Division in ye town of Shaftsbury" to Daniel Tryon of New Fairfield. This was not recorded in Shaftsbury until 22 Jun 1786. The second document was a land sale from Daniel Tryon of Shaftsbury to David and Jacob Galusha dated 14 April 1791, recorded there 24 November 1800. More important is the third document which is dated 13 February 1795 and lists Daniel Tryon of Shaftsbury initially, but the writer went back and crossed out Shaftsbury and wrote in "Caldwell Manor in the Province of Canada". This particular land sale involved the majority of Lot #56 going to David Galusha. From these documents the assumption can be drawn that Daniel Tryon, with or without his wife Ellenor, must have moved to Quebec to be with his son David between the 1791 census and 1795. The first census of Vermont does show Daniel "Trial" and a woman of about the same age residing at Shaftsbury at this time. Perhaps his wife died between these same years of 1791 and 1795 and he decided to leave to be with his son. No record of Daniel or his wife has been uncovered in Caldwell's Manor. David Tryon is their only known child at this time.1 He appeared on the census of 1790 at Shaftsbury, Bennington Co, Vermont; as Daniel "Trial".5
Children of Daniel1 Tryon and Ellenor Vaughan were:

Generation Two

2. DAVID2 TRYON (Daniel1) was born in 1762 at Fishkill, Dutchess Co, New York.6 He married Elizabeth Lewis, daughter of Timothy Lewis and Sarah Austin, on 9 Jun 1783 at Congregational Church, Ashfield, Franklin Co, Massachusetts; David Tryon and Elisabeth Lewis, both of “Shafsbury New-State,” June 9, 1783. Intention not recorded.7,8 He married Anna Bullis, daughter of Joseph Bullis and Lydia Johnson, between 1815 and 1827; Anna was named as his wife in David's pension records. We know that on 11 Nov 1827, William Tryon, then of Hinchenbrooke, Quebec, sold land in Sabrevois to Joshua Bullis, Anna's son.6 He died on 11 Feb 1836 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont; Death date was given on his final payment voucher received from the General Accounting Office for his service pension.6,9
On 18 Dec 1822, there was a Protest by Leon Lalanne, Notary, against David Tryon, put forth at the request of Stephen Hix Salls. Supposedly, on the 2nd day of November past, agreement was reached and deed given to Stephen Hix Salls for land on the north side of the "highway", from Taylor's Mills to the River Richelieu, which is opposite of Lot #15 in the Fourth Concession of Noyan. Stephen Hix Salls was ready to accept all terms and David Tryon replied, "I am sick and unable to attend to any business this day", so the notary offered to execute the Title at David's house, and he made the same reply. Stephen insisted he be reimbursed for all damages and expenses as a result of the delay. Isaac French and Peter Williams were witnesses. In "order that the said David might not pretend and plead ignornace hereof an authentic copy of these presents has been left with him.".10 According to David Tryon's sworn statement on 20 Feb 1835, he was "born in a place then called Fishkill in the state of New York...in the year A.D. 1762". In March 1780, David was residing at Shaftsbury, Vermont where he enlisted for nine months service in the military under Captain William Hutchins in Colonel Ebenezer Allen's Regiment. They "marched to Pittsford where they built a picket fort and scouted from place to place to protect the inhabitants from Indians, Tories and and British...". He served nine months and was discharged. According to his own story, he removed to New Fairfield, Connecticut for a short time after his service. His name appears on the 1782 list of Freeman at Shaftsbury. By 1783/4 David Tryon was of Clarenceville, Quebec, but it is possible his wife Elizabeth remained for a time in Vermont or Ashfield, MA while he prepared for their lives in Quebec. Many documents concerning the Tryons are located within the files of Leon Lalanne, a notary for the area. It appears he was ill in 1835 as several notarial documents show he was taking care of land he held. In 1835 there were two transactions to Henry Salls concerning the land granted him in Hereford. On 2 Jan 1836, only a month before his death, he appointed Henry Salls attorney for the land there. On 8 Jan 1836, he appointed Albert Chapman as attorney for the land he had previously purchased from Samuel Wells in Farnham (original sale from Wells was passed before Samuel Gale, notary of Farnham - no date mentioned). David Tryon's pension application on 20 Feb 1835 says he is a resident of Alburgh, Vermont, however, I find it very unlikely that he ever lived there. I would assume he made a statement to that effect so that he might be able to draw a pension, which he did. I don't believe he ever left Quebec, however, as of this writing (1990) no gravestone has ever been located nor any record of his death, other than the date given by his widow on later pension papers. Phineas Smith of Alburgh testified 20 Feb 1835 that he personally knew of David Tryon's service during the Revolutionary War in the year 1780. Richard Latin of Franklin, Vermont also testified on that same day that he was personally acquainted with David Tryon. A statement dated 17 May 1836, taken at Alburgh, Vermont, signed by William Ford, states that David Tryon died 11 Feb 1836, and he "helped lay him out, sat up with his corpse, and helped bury him". No gravestone has ever been located for David Tryon.6,11
Children of David2 Tryon and Elizabeth Lewis were as follows:
There were no children of David2 Tryon and Anna Bullis.

Generation Three

3. DAVID3 TRYON JR (David2, Daniel1) was born circa 1784 at Shaftsbury, Bennington Co, Vermont. He married Polly Hillman on 6 Jul 1806 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont.12 He married Jane Crawford, daughter of Henry Crawford, circa 1810. He married Rhoda Skeels, daughter of David Skeels and Lydia Powell, on 4 Nov 1835. He died on 5 May 1876 at Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.13 He was buried on 7 May 1876 at St George's Anglican Cemetery, Clarenceville, Missisquoi Co, Quebec.14
David Tryon Jr was born about 1784 probably in Shaftsbury, Vermont. Although his parents married in 1783 at Ashfield, Massachusetts, they were both of Shaftsbury. His mother, Elizabeth Lewis, may have stayed with her in-laws while his father went on to Canada to stake out their home, or it is possible that David Tryon did not arrive in the Manors as early as stated in several sources. Also, his son, John T. Tryon, listed his father's birthplace as VT in the 1880 Kansas census. It appears that David Tryon Jr was a strong follower of Methodism. It has been a great disappointment to not yet locate the baptismal records of his children except for that of Mary in 1814 in the Dunham Wesleyan Methodist Circuit Steward's book (1806-1882). Even in this record the birth date is incomplete, giving only the year. In a document located within the files of notary Leon Lalanne dated 19 July 1822, David Tryon "the younger" of Caldwell Manor voluntarily donated land in Lot #18 in the 6th Range to the British Wesleyan Methodist Society "with a view to the facilitation of the preaching and the teaching of the Gospel in Caldwells Manor.." for "permanent establishment of the doctrines...in the Reverend John Wesley's Notes upon the New Testament and his four volumes of sermons.." Later, in the 1830's his children's marriages are recorded by the minister of the St Armand Methodist Church. Clarenceville's Methodist Church finally began in 1845, and his branch of the family began attending there. He appeared on the census of 1851 at Clarenceville, Rouville Co, Quebec; David Tryan, farmer, b. US, Methodist, 68, Rhoda, b. US, Presbyterian, 56, Jane, Methodist, 33, widowed.15
There were no children of David3 Tryon Jr and Polly Hillman.
Children of David3 Tryon Jr and Jane Crawford were as follows:
There were no children of David3 Tryon Jr and Rhoda Skeels.
4. WILLIAM3 TRYON (David2, Daniel1) was born on 16 Jan 1785 at Ashfield, Franklin Co, Massachusetts; Since William's birth was recorded at Ashfield, MA, it is possible that Elizabeth remained behind with her family there while David made a home for them in Caldwell's Manor. The other possibility is that they registered the birth during a visit back to see her family considering there was little way of doing such at the Manor. Many of the early settlers were used to registering births and marriages in the local towns in the states, and even in the early 1800's, many still crossed back over the border to have their marriages registered at Alburgh, VT and other border towns.19 He married Sarah Scott, daughter of Thomas Scott and Anna Willoughby, circa 1805. He died on 31 Dec 1864 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York, at age 79.20 He was buried at Moira Cemetery, Moira, Franklin Co, New York.20
Very little is known about the family of William Tryon and his wife Sarah Scott during the early 1800's. The family were Methodists while living in Moira, NY and perhaps future investigation will uncover much needed church records. Shortly before 1830, William Tryon's two brothers, Abel and Benjamin, were known to be residing in Fort Covington, Franklin County, NY. The record of William's daughter Nancy being born there about 1829 implies that he was there as well and may have even preceeded the family. One document dated 2 January 1821 found within the files of notary Leon Lalanne shows us that he sold all his belongings to his brother Abel Tryon. The list gives us a look at his way of life at that time: two horses, four cows, "one yoke of oxen", a yearling, 30 sheep, four "hoggs", 20 tons of hay, 50 bushels of corn, 50 bushel of wheat, two kettles, one pair hand irons, two beds and bedding, two barrels of pork, four barrels of flour, one cupboard, two chests and contents, one plough, and a double sleigh. All these moveable items were sold to Abel Tryon for 92 pounds 5 shillings. On the same date he also sold Lot #7 in the 4th Range and Lot 9 in the 5th Range to Abel. On 27 July 1824 there was a deed of sale executed before Leon Lalanne whereby William Tryon sold two tracts of land in Noyan known as Lots #8 (in part) and #9 in the 5th Range to his brother-in-law Thomas Scott, Jr. These tracts of land had been originally acquired in 1820. Deeds on file in Sherbrooke, Quebec indicate William Tryon was of Hinchenbrooke in Quebec by March 1833, but his eldest son, Philander, was of Moira by 1830, and both he and his father were listed in Moira in 1840. He had finally put down roots.1 He appeared on the census of 14 Aug 1850 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; William Tryon, 66, b. VT, wife Sarah, 60, b. Canada, and Adelaide Stephenson, 8.21 He appeared on the census of 12 Jul 1860 at Moira, Franklin Co, New York; William Tryon, aged 76, and wife Sarah, aged 71 had living with them their daughter Paulina, then 45.22

In March of 1836, Timothy Tryon sold land to his brother, Abel, and it was mentioned that Timothy was "one of the presumtive heirs of David Tryon and Elizabeth Lewis, his wife, their parents, late of Noyan aforesaid, both deceased.". This was before Leon Lalanne.51 It may be that Timothy and his second wife Nancy moved to New York from Quebec in 1848. A 1910 census listing in Iowa for his son Albert, says he came to the US that year. We know Timothy married in Canada in 1845 so it is likely that 1848 is very close, if not the actual year the family moved.1 He appeared on the census of 19 Jul 1860 at Burke, Franklin Co, New York; Timothy "Tryan", aged 63, and wife Ann, 53 were living between neighbors Charles Percy and James Mastin.52 He appeared on the census of 21 Jun 1870 at Burke, Franklin Co, New York; Timothy Tryon, 73, b. It also chronicles his two marriages, his first wife "dying March 12,1861, leaving five children - four boys and one girl. His second wife, by whom he had four children, now lives in Sacramento, Cal., where the family moved about fourteen years ago. Mr. Tryon's health failing him there, he returned to Kansas about four years ago, and being so benefited in health he remained here. Eight children survive him. He was an old member of the Masonic fraternity, and was well respected by all who knew him." It tells that his illness was one of only several week's duration, and that his children by his first wife were all with him during his last hours and in attendance at the funeral. He died at the house of his son, C.J. Tryon, who lived 5 miles northwest of the city. His father, David Tryon, was a boy at the time of the Revolutionary War, grandfather Tryon at the time living in Vermont, United States, but his sympathies were with his mother country, and he with his family moved across the line, going 200 miles by ox teams into the timber and settling on “rent lands,” at Clarenceville, Province of Quebec. David Tryon grew up there and married Jennie Crawford, a native of Scotland; the subject of this sketch was their only son. He grew to manhood, and at the age of twenty-three was married to Adelia A. Billings. She having died in 1861, he was again married, to Miranda R. Billings, a Canadian, her father being a Vermonter, but not near related to his first wife. By this second marriage there were four children. In 1869, he with his family removed to Atchison County, Kansas. After six years they took up a homestead in Pottawatomie County, living thereon seven years, then removed to the southern part of the State, within fifty miles of Indian Territory. Falling heir to the estate of Ephraim L. Billings, who had come to California in the early day and settled in Sacramento, and died in January, 1883, they removed to this city, where they have made their home ever since.112

Governor of the Province of Quebec, Prime Minister King and Hon. Adelard Godbout, then Premier of Quebec; Senator C.B.Howard and a host of other more or less prominent people. Boulais, her son in law and daughter, with whom she has resided for many years, to inquire about her health.
