Descendants of Job Stanley

Generation One

1. JOB1 STANLEY was born between 1765 and 1768 at Cape Ann, Essex Co, Massachusetts; Until 1840, the town of Gloucester covered the entire Cape, so by saying he was born on Cape Ann, circa 1768, he was born Gloucester. No record of birth can be located there as of 2000.1,2,3,4 He married (--?--) (--?--) before 1790. He married Isabella Dyer, daughter of Solomon Dyer and Isabella Eldridge, circa 1795 at Barnstable Co, Massachusetts. He died on 6 Jan 1854 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.5 He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
By 1798 and 1800, Job and wife Isabella were residents of Provincetown in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. Job "Stanly" is listed in Provincetown, along with his wife and two daughters under the age of 10 in the 1800 census, but no sign of John Stanley. There are no land records in that area under the name of Stanley. Job did purchase land in Newmarket, New Hampshire in 1801, but sold it in 1802. Job's son Andrew's death indicates he was born at Mount Desert, Maine about 1810. There are many Stanleys in the area of Mount Desert and Cranberry Isles, but as yet, cannot find a connection. Another document, dated April 1822, concerned Job's three eldest sons and their petition for land - Lots 7, 8, and 9, all part of the original grant to Charles Schoenwolf and others in 1786. Solomon was listed as ae 25, Job as 22 and Joseph as 20, all unmarried. These ages differ slightly from further census records. Also stated was that they had been in the province of New Brunswick "upwards of 14 years...[and] never receiving any allotment of land". They mentioned that this land had never been cultivated or cleared. Worth mentioning was the fact that both Solomon and Job signed their last name as STANDLEY and Joseph made his "mark". The 1851 census at Simonds Parish [p. 45] show Job ae 87, a fisherman and wife Isabella ae 84, both born in the U.S. and entering New Brunswick in 1812.6,7 Job's petition for land on Cape Breton in 1812 indicates: "Petition to Nepean: Petitioner was born at Cape Ann, Massachusetts, has lived in New Brunswick two years. He has a wife and seven children. He asks land at Cape North, adjoining the lot of Thomas Burnet. Note: There is vacant land at Cape North, but the situations are not known at this office.".3 The Memorial of Job Stanley dated at Saint John 3 May 1821 shows he was a farmer at that time and he and his family had resided on Lot #2 for nearly four years. At that time he had built a house, and a fish house, had cleared about five acres. Part of the cleared acreage was actually within Lot #3 but he hadn't realized at the time [NB Land Petitions film #F4191, p. 662]. On 7 Jun 1842, Both Job and "Belta?" (definitely not Isabella or Bella) arrived in Boston on the ship "Banner" from the port of St George in New Brunswick. Job was aged 74 and Isabella, 69.2 He appeared on the census of 1851 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Job Stanley, 87 (which would make him born about 1765), b. "States", fisherman, entered New Brunswick in 1812. His wife, Isabella, was 84, who was also born in the US, and entered in 1812. They were the only family inhabiting the house, and had one other building on site. They were listed next to the Daniel Thomas family as well as the William Thomas family.8

Generation Two

2. JOHN2 STANLEY (Job1) was born circa 1793 at England.11 He married Mary Esther Woodbury before 1818. He died after 1881 at Mispec, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; John "Standley", 88, b. England, wid, was living in the household of his son Warren Stanley and family. Solomon "Standley", 82, wid, b. US, was also there as were Mary Daly, 44, widow, b. US, J. Edgar Daly, 3, Frank, 6 and Sarah E., b. Oct 1880.11
It has not been verified that John Stanley is the son of Job, but it can not be overlooked as a possibility. However, it is unlikely that Isabella Dyer was his mother. All census records list John to be born in England. Of course, this would mean that Job Stanley had to have been in England about 1790. In any case, there was a definite relationship between Job Stanley and John Stanley. In 1821, John and wife Esther were already in Grand Manan as they appear in that census. The 1851 census for Grand Manan lists that he entered the province in 1818. Coincidentally, the 1821 Memorial of Job Stanley says he had been on the same particular lot almost 4 years. Might it possibly be that Job was of England, fathering John about 1790 - Perhaps his wife died in childbirth and John was left to be cared for by her family? Job Stanley came to Massachusetts, married Isabella, had several children while always moving on, looking for a good place to settle. Finally, after setting down roots on Lot 2 [NB Land Petitions, film #F4191, p. 662], he sent for his son to come be with him? Maybe John Stanley arrived in 1818, but seeing that opportunity was better on Grand Manan, moved there almost immediately. That would explain why petition for land was made by Job's other sons, Soloman, Job and Joseph. John was already settled in Grand Manan before 1821, and the sons made their petition for land in 1822. In 1881, John and his son Warren, along with his wife and son, are found living in Mispec. Warren was the head of the household, and Solomon Stanley, aged 82 was living with them. Solomon must be John's brother. Alot more research must go into John's background if we are to learn about Job Stanley.11,6

4. SOLOMON DYER2 STANLEY (Job1) was born in Oct 1799 at Provincetown, Barnstable Co, Massachusetts; Burial Permit lists Providence, US as his birthplace and that he was a fisherman. LIkely that Providence was a mistake for Provincetown.18 He married Martha Bennett Daley, daughter of Joseph Daley and Abigail Hammond, on 23 Jul 1821 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Martha's marriage record shows a witness to be a George "Dealey". She was listed as a Dealey as well. He married Sarah Cronk, daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret Stork, on 10 Nov 1853 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.19 He died on 9 Mar 1891 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 91; He was aged 91 yrs, 5 mos, living at the corner of Rodney & Union Streets, West Saint John.18 He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.18

USA, a fisherman, and a Wesleyan Methodist, living in the household of Warren Standley and his family. Also in the household was John Standley, 88, b. Agreement was made to alllow a right of access for foot passengers, and access to the Bay of Fundy, allowing small boats to land with provisions and the conveying of manure used for cultivation.29 He appeared on the census of 1851 at Simonds Parish, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Job Stanley, 49, widower, b.
