1. David1DALEY was born circa 1735. He married Mehitable Webber on 18 Nov 1755 in York, York Co, ME. He died
after 1785 in NB.
In Banks' "History of York", he states that seven immigrants arrived in York
from Scotland & Ireland between 1700 and 1750. John Daley is listed as the last
of the seven, having an arrival date of 1735. Mr. Banks also mentions that
records of these individuals will appear in his 3rd volume of York history. The
3rd volume was never published.
In 1757 the first complete list of York's town militia includes both John Daley
and David Daley, as well as Jonathan Stover. Many men were there representing
the Webber family. Capt. Ichabod Goodwin's company from York in 1758 which had
been present for the campaign of Ticonderoga during July included a John Dailey.
In 1762, Capt. Johnson Moulton's company (he had been Ensign in Capt. Goodwin's
company in 1758), John Daley was listed as a private.
The only land record I find within York County for David Daley is dated 18 May
1758. Joseph Stover, Jr. of York sold David Daley, "mariner" of York, a half
acre of land in York situated on the southwest side of "Cape Nedick River" for
"five pounds six shillings & eight pence". A Jonathan Stover married a Mary
Daley in 1757 at York...possibly she was a sister to David.
A July 1784 listing for present inhabitants of the settlement at Penobscot
shows the only Dailey still there was John Dailey, on 100 acres of land, 40 rods
of this on the water. he was living there alone. The original settler of this
lot had been David Dailey in 1765. Other lots showing Dailey ownership:
Widow Rhodes 100 acres settled 1762 by Jonathan Stover
Jos Stover heirs 100 acres settled 1762 by John Dailey
John Bray & Jr 100 acres settled 1761 by David Dailey
[next to one another],
John Grindal 100 acres settled 1762 by John Dailey
By this time, in 1784, David Daley was gone, as was Jonathan Stover. Perhaps
David Daley and family left with the fleet of vessels which sailed from
Penobscot in late Septemeber 1783 and arrived at St Andrews on October 3rd.
About half of the refugees sailed at this time. Others must have come by private
vessel, or had been among those who made the journey over land by wagon-train.
Included on a list of 599 refugees who had been waiting to go were Zebedee
Hammond and David Dailey. Jonathan Stover was not located. He was also not among
the listing taken 10 June 1784 of Loyalists settled at Passamaquoddy, although
Zebedee Hammond and David Dailey were both listed, as well as their wives and
children. One hundred acre farm lots were granted under the title "Penobscot
Association - Stephen Roberts and 189 others". David Dailey received one of the
twenty 100 acre lots [#18] surrounding Bobabec Cove, about seven miles north of
St Andrews. He did not receive a town lot. On 30 July 1785 David and Mehitable
"Dailey" sold Lot #18 to James Turner[Charlotte Co. Deeds, Book A, p.11].
Mehitable WEBBER was born circa 1737 in ME. She died after
1784 in NB.
Children of David1Daley and Mehitable Webber all born in ME
were as follows:
+ 2 i. Joseph2
DALEY, born before 1773; married Abigail Hammond.
2. Joseph2DALEY (David1) was born before 1773 in ME. He
married Abigail Hammond, daughter of Zebedee
Hammond and Martha Bennett, before 1801. He died before 1851
in Saint John Co, NB.
In November of 1996, this writer found deed #2151, within the county of Saint
John, dated 21 September 1815, concerning a Joseph Daley of the parish of
Portland, farmer, and his wife Abigail, selling a lot of land (full description
undecipherable from the microfilmed record) to John Scott and wife Martha. It is
mentioned that the lot was originally granted to George Smith, deceased, by the
Crown. Further investigation was necessary to discover what lot this is and what
future transactions were on this land.
In January of 1997, another deed was found - #6221 within Saint John County
records. Joseph Dailey and wife Abigail of Portland sold to David Dailey for 150
pounds "western half of part of all that certain lot of land situated at or near
Red Head in the County of Saint John"...originally a grant from the Crown to
George Smith, then deceased. The lot was #200 and contained about 200 acres, and
this transaction was dated 29 November 1821. There were other land records found
involving both Joseph and Abigail Daley.
On a 10 June 1784 return of the families there, one David DAILEY was listed
along with his wife Mehitable and four children, all over the age of 10: Mary,
Sarah, Joseph and George. Joseph was present in Saint John in 1801 land records.
In trying to establish an earlier time record for Joseph Daley, land record
#1454 [1804-1806, K1-S-1], shows that George Smith's widow Mary Ann sells Lot #2
in Red Head to Henry Thomas. Record #1455 dated 25 November 1806 shows that
Henry & wf Abigail Thomas of Saint John selling this lot to Joseph DAILEY of
same, mariner for 30 pounds.
This would place Joseph Daley in Red Head about 1806/7. Future research should
focus on where he and wife Abigail Hammond may have married and where David was
born.
Abigail HAMMOND was born circa 1775 in ME. She died after
1851 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB. In 1851, in the census of Simonds [p. 46],
Abigail "Dealy" is listed as a widow and Loyalist [who entered New Brunswick in
1783] with Solomon Stanley and his children. Also living in the same household
was Sarah, sister to his deceased wife. She would become his second wife in
1853.
This writer is now trying to prove that Abigail is the daughter of Zebedee
Hammond, a Penobscot Loyalist, who settled in St Andrews, Charlotte County, NB.
He was a mariner. On a return dated 10 June 1784, Zebedee Hammond was listed
with his wife Martha. Children over ten were: Abigail Hammond and Nathaniel
Hammond. Children under the age of ten were: Patunel Hammond, Martha Hammond and
Zebedee Hammond. It would fit very nicely if Zebedee Sr's wife prove to a
Bennett, since a daughter of Abigail and her husband Daley was named Martha
Bennett Daley. On 9 June 1802, an obituary appeared in the N.B. Royal Gazette
for Zebedee Hammond Sr., of St Andrews. Further investigation is necessary at
this point[March, 1993].
Children of Joseph2Daley and Abigail Hammond were as
follows:
+ 6 i. Henry3
DALEY, born in NB; married Sarah Cronk.
+ 7 ii. David DALEY, born circa
1801 in NB; married Sarah Stanley.
6. Henry3DALEY (Joseph2, David1) was born in NB. He married Sarah Cronk, daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret Stork, on 24 Aug 1832 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB
(St Andrew's Church, Saint John). He died before 1851 in NB?
Henry "Daly" and Sarah Cronk were both of Portland upon marriage, David "Daley"
being witness to the ceremony.
In land records, #19618 registered on 31 May 1851, there was a transaction
whereas Henry Daily of the parish of Simonds, did sell and transfer land "sold
by my father Joseph Daily to James Smith, shipbuilder, deeded to me by said
James Smith for the benefit of my self to assist in supporting my father and
mother Joseph Daily and Abigail Daily". The original document was dated 5 April
1848, and not registered until 1851, which is likely to have been the
approximate time that Henry Daley died. He was not present in the 1851 census,
and widow Sarah, sons David and William and mother Abigial were living with
Solomon Stanley.
Sarah CRONK was born circa 1813 in Saint John Co, NB
(info from 1851 census, Simonds Parish, Saint John County, NB). She married Solomon Dyer Stanley, son of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 10 Nov 1853 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB
(NB Courier, 12 Nov 1853). She died after 1853 in Saint John Co, NB. An entry
dated 12 Nov 1853 in the New Brunswick Courier shows "m. 10th instant, by rev.
Wm. Donald, Solomon Stanley and Mrs. Sarah Daley, both of Mispec."
Children of Henry3Daley and Sarah Cronk all born in NB were
as follows:
9 i. David4
DALEY was born circa 1845 (info from 1851 census, Simonds Parish, Saint John
County, NB).
10 ii. William DALEY was born
circa 1847 (info from 1851 census, Simonds Parish, Saint John County, NB).
11 iii. Annie Stanley DALEY was
born on 24 May 1850.
7. David3DALEY (Joseph2, David1) was born circa 1801 in NB. He
married Sarah Stanley, daughter of Job
Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 20 Dec 1821 in Saint John, Saint
John Co, NB. He died on 19 Jun 1876 in Portland, Saint John Co, NB (Daily Times
[Saint John], 20 Jun 1876). He was buried on 21 Jun 1876 in Church of England
Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.
After looking through early Saint John County land records, it would seem
probable (although not proven) that David Daley might be the son of a Joseph
Dailey/Dayley. Joseph purchased land in 1801, lot #488, from Samuel Hewey. In
1806, a record shows Mary Ann Smith, widow & heir of George Smith, selling Lot
#2 of 200 acres at Red Head, Saint John County to Henry Thomas. It was then
occupied by Benjamin Mosely [Land record #1454]. On 25 November 1806 [#1455],
Henry and Abigail Thomas sold that same lot of land for 30 pounds to Joseph
Dailey, mariner of Saint John. Since Joseph Daley was born at Red Head, chances
are good that Joseph may have been his grandfather. Further investigation into
the land records is necessary.
David "Daly", 70, born New Brunswick, and wife Sarah, 68, b. Nova Scotia, along
with daughter Patience, then aged 49, are found within the 1871 census records
for Portland Parish, Saint John County. They were all listed as Baptist, and
while Sarah was listed as of English origin, both David and daughter Patience
were listed as Irish.
His obituary (Saint John Daily Telegraph, 20 Jun 1876), reads, "In Portland, on
Monday, 19th inst, after a short illness, David Daly(sic), aged 75 years,
leaving a wife and large family to mourn their loss. Funeral on Weds. the 21st
at 2 PM from his late residence near the Marsh Bridge."
Sarah STANLEY was born circa 1802 in Cape Cod, MA. She
died on 6 Jan 1882 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Saint John Daily
Telegraph, 7 January 1882). She was buried on 8 Jan 1882 (Saint John Daily
Telegraph, 7 January 1882). The 1881 of Portland Parish in Saint John, Saint
John County, show Sarah Daley, aged 76, born the United States, widow, and
living in the household with James Morrison and his wife, her daughter,
Patience, and a John Daley, then aged 17.
The Saint John Daily Telegraph, dated 7 January 1882, mentions she was the
widow of David Daley, Esquire, and that her funeral would be held from the
residence of her son-in-law, Walter Lane, on Wright Street.
Children of David3Daley and Sarah Stanley were as follows:
12 i. Patience4 DALEY was born circa 1822 in NB. She
married James Morrison after 1871. She died on 26 Dec 1912 in
Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. She was buried in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB
(Church of England Cemetery).
+ 13 ii. Emily DALEY, born circa
1827 in Saint John Co, NB; married Ebenezer McNichol.
+ 14 iii. Joseph DALEY, born 9 Jul
1830 in Red Head, Saint John Co, NB; married Mary Hepburn.
+ 15 iv. Amanda DALEY, born circa
1833 in Saint John Co, NB; married Walter Lane.
+ 16 v. William Seth DALEY, born 4
Nov 1836 in Portland, Saint John Co, NB; married Margaret
Russell.
+ 17 vi. Isabella DALEY, born 4 Sep
1845 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB; married Walter Lane.
8. Martha
Bennett3DALEY (Joseph2, David1) married Solomon
Dyer Stanley, son of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 23 Jul 1821 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB.
She died before 1851 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB.
Martha's marriage record shows a witness to be a George "Dealey". She was
listed as a Dealey as well. This George could very well give reason to name her
father George, since she also named a son George.
Solomon Dyer STANLEY was born in Oct 1799 in
Provincetown, Barnstable Co, MA. He married Sarah Cronk,
daughter of Frederick Cronk and Margaret
Stork, on 10 Nov 1853 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (NB Courier, 12 Nov
1853). He died on 9 Mar 1891 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 91
(burial permit Vol 3, #746, Saint John County). He was buried in Cedar Hill
Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. According to a document dated April
1822 [NB Land Petitions, film #F4193, p. 730], Soloman was not married, and a
farmer aged 25 years, making him born 1797.
Children of Martha Bennett3Daley and Solomon Dyer Stanley
all born in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB, were as follows:
+ 18 i. Richard4
STANLEY, married Mary McCracken; married Jane Sullivan.
19 ii. Solomon STANLEY Jr was born
circa 1826. He married Harriet Daley on 10 Nov 1851 in Saint
John, Saint John Co, NB. He died on 18 Jan 1880 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB
(Saint John Daily Telegraph, 23 January 1880).
Solomon's obituary, which appeared in the Saint John Daily Times on 23 Jan uary
1880, states that he left a wife and six children behind.
+ 20 iii. Henry STANLEY, born circa
1829; married Margaret Jenkins; married Eliza Silliplant; married Hannah (--?--).
+ 21 iv. George STANLEY, born circa
1831; married Isabella Thomas.
22 v. Andrew STANLEY was born on 16
Jan 1833 (b'date from 1901 census, Guys Ward, Saint John). He married Jane Jenkins on 29 Oct 1857 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. He
married Mary Ann Burns on 30 Oct 1876 in Saint John, Saint
John Co, NB. He died on 20 Jan 1904 in Mispec, Saint John Co, NB, at age 71
(burial permit Vol 13, #373, Saint John County). He was buried in Saint John,
Saint John Co, NB (Cedar Hill Cemetery).
The marriage record of Andrew Stanley and his 2nd wife Mary Ann Burns shows
William Daley and Sarah M. Turner as witnesses. This writer believes that
William Daley was Andrew's step brother, the son of Henry Daley and Sarah Cronk.
Burial permit #373 lists that Andrew Stanley was a fireman and lived on King
Street [West End]. He apparently died from pneumonia, and was buried at Cedar
Hill Cemetery with other Stanleys. While his father is listed as having been
Solomon Stanley, it also lists his birthplace as Ireland, which should be
considered.
23 vi. Martha STANLEY was born
circa 1835. She married William Bryans on 28 Sep 1854 in Saint
John, Saint John Co, NB.
She and William Bryans appeared on the census of 1881 in
Simonds, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.1
13. Emily4DALEY (David3, Joseph2, David1) was born circa 1827 in Saint John
Co, NB. She married Ebenezer McNichol on 8 May 1846 in Saint
John, Saint John Co, NB (NB Courier [Saint John], 6 Jun 1846). She died on 17
Nov 1849 in Saint John Co, NB (NB Courier [Saint John], 24 Nov 1849, ae 22
yrs).
Ebenezer MCNICHOL was born circa 1816 (info from 1851
census, Saint John [Duke/Queens]). He married Charlotte
Maloney on 3 Apr 1851 in Saint John Co, NB.
Children of Emily4Daley and Ebenezer McNichol both born in
Saint John Co, NB, were as follows:
24 i. Daniel5 MCNICHOL was born circa 1847 (info
from 1851 census, Saint John [Duke/Queens]).
25 ii. Emily MCNICHOL was born
circa 1849 (info from 1851 census, Saint John [Duke/Queens]).
14. Joseph4DALEY (David3, Joseph2, David1) was born on 9 Jul 1830 in Red Head,
Saint John Co, NB (b'date from 1901 census, Victoria Ward, Saint John). He
married Mary Hepburn, daughter of Edmund
Hepburn and (--?--) (--?--), circa 1860. He died on 20 May
1907 in Old Loch Lomond Road, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 76. He was
buried on 22 May 1907 in Methodist Burying Ground, Saint John, Saint John Co,
NB.
He appeared on the census of 1861 in Albert Ward, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB
(The 1861 census shows Joseph, aged 32, Mary, 30 and eldest child, Amanda E.
Daley, aged 1). He was Carpenter in 1907. He lived in 1907 in Old Loch Lomond
Road, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB (Burial Permit).
Mary HEPBURN was born on 27 Feb 1827 in Musquash, Saint
John Co, NB (b'date from 1901 census, Victoria Ward, Saint John). She died on 5
Oct 1919 in Saint John, Saint John Co, NB, at age 92. She was buried on 7 Oct
1919 in Methodist Burying Ground, Saint John, Saint John Co, NB. Mary's obituary
in the Saint John Globe dated Monday, 6 October 1919 tells that she died Sunday
at the home of her son Henry Daley on Westmorland Road. She was born at
Musquash. Records held by the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery on Thorne Avenue,
Saint John confirm her birth at Musquash as well as tell us that her father was
Edmund "Hebbern" born in Ireland. For many years no sign of a Edmund Hepburn was
uncovered.
Descendants of Alexander Hepburn who was supposedly born in Scotland all tell
tales about "Aunt" Mary Daley. This writer began to think it was all a mistake
and Mary had been a daughter of Alexander Hepburn after all. Then a passage was
found in the book "The Sound of Many Waters " by Ethel Thompson [1980] which
said that Edmund Hepburn who had come from Ireland had settled in Musquash in an
area which became known as Hepburn's Basin. No further mention was made of him.
I tried to reach the author, but to no avail.

William Seth Daley was living in Dufferin Ward, Division 2, during the 1891
census of Saint John. He was listed as Calvinist Baptist and a stevedore by
occupation. His son Frederick was also a stevedore, and son Edmund a Baptist
