Ancestors of John Daley
Generation One
1. JOHN1 DALEY1 was born in May 1712 at County Cork, Munster Province, Ireland;
In Banks' "History of York", it is stated that seven immigrants arrived in York from Scotland and Ireland between 1700 and 1750. John Daley is listed as the last of the seven, having an arrival date of 1735. Mr. Banks also mentions that records of these individuals will appear in his 3rd volume of York history. The 3rd volume was never published.
In a random stroke of luck, this writer searched the volumes of The Maine Genealogist for the Daleys in York. After decades of research, a birth record was found for David Daley, 1735/6 which listed his parents names, their births and where in Ireland. Even more was the fact that both grandfathers' names as well.2 He married Mary Diggin, daughter of Murtough Diggin, at Ireland.1 He died at probably Maine.
A Petition dated 3 Oct 1763, of Penobscot inhabitants to Governor Francis Bernard included two John Dalys and a David Daly. It points to the fact that David Daley's father John Daley/Daly also had a son John Daly.3
Children of John1 Daley and Mary Diggin were as follows:
-
i. MARY?2 married Jonathan Stover on 6 Jan 1757 at York, York Co, Maine.4
-
ii. JOHN.1
-
2. iii. DAVID was born on 2 Mar 1735/36 at York, York Co, Maine. He married Mehitable Webber on 18 Nov 1755 at York, York Co, Maine. He died after 30 Jul 1785 at New Brunswick.
Generation Two
2. DAVID2 DALEY (John1) was born on 2 Mar 1735/36 at York, York Co, Maine; This record which was found in an old transcription by the Town Clerk is not found with published York Vital Records.5 He married Mehitable Webber on 18 Nov 1755 at York, York Co, Maine; He and Mehitable Webber had also filed their marriage intention on 1 Nov 1755 at York.4 He died after 30 Jul 1785 at New Brunswick;
David Dailey and wife Mehitable of St Andrews, Charlotte Co, sold to James Turner for 15 pounds seven shillings a tract of land near the head of Passamaquoddy Bay. It was Lot #18 in the Penobscot Association and contained 100 acres. His signature was David Daley, and Mehitable made her mark. The payment was to be made in lumber by the 20th of September, 1785.6
The only land record I find within York County for David Daley is dated 18 May 1758. Joseph Stover, Jr. of York sold David Daley, "mariner" of York, a half acre of land in York situated on the southwest side of "Cape Nedick River" for "five pounds six shillings & eight pence". A Jonathan Stover married a Mary Daley in 1757 at York...possibly she was a sister to David.
A July 1784 listing for present inhabitants of the settlement at Penobscot shows the only Dailey still there was John Dailey, on 100 acres of land, 40 rods of this on the water. he was living there alone. The original settler of this lot had been David Dailey in 1765. Other lots showing Dailey ownership:
Widow Rhodes 100 acres settled 1762 by Jonathan Stover
Jos Stover heirs 100 acres settled 1762 by John Dailey
John Bray & Jr 100 acres settled 1761 by David Dailey [next to one another],
John Grindal 100 acres settled 1762 by John Dailey
By this time, in 1784, David Daley was gone, as was Jonathan Stover. Perhaps David Daley and family left with the fleet of vessels which sailed from Penobscot in late September 1783 and arrived at St Andrews on October 3rd. About half of the refugees sailed at this time. Others must have come by private vessel, or had been among those who made the journey over land by wagon-train. Included on a list of 599 refugees who had been waiting to go were Zebedee Hammond and David Dailey. Jonathan Stover was not located. He was also not among the listing taken 10 June 1784 of Loyalists settled at Passamaquoddy, although Zebedee Hammond and David Dailey were both listed, as well as their wives and children. One hundred acre farm lots were granted under the title "Penobscot Association - Stephen Roberts and 189 others". David Dailey received one of the twenty 100 acre lots [#18] surrounding Bobabec Cove, about seven miles north of St Andrews. He did not receive a town lot.7
On 30 Oct 1761, a notice was printed in the Hampshire Gazette paper that David Daley, of York, had a letter waiting at the Portsmouth Post Office.8 David Daley, of York, had a letter in the Portsmouth Post Office on 28 October 1761.9
A Petition dated 3 Oct 1763, of Penobscot inhabitants to Governor Francis Bernard included two John Dalys and a David Daly. It is quite possible that David Daley's father John Daley/Daly also had a son John Daly. No further data.3
The Return of Men, Women and Children of the Penobscot Loyalists settled in the District of Passamaquoddy, 10 Jun 1784, lists David Daily, Mehitable, and children over 10, Mary, Sarah, Joseph and George.
A listing of settlers at Penobscot on 13 Jul 1784 shows that 100 acres originally settled by David Dailey in 1761 in Penobscot was now settled by John Bray and John Bray Jr. Another 100 acres settled by David Dailey in 1765 was now settled by John Dailey. This could be the mark letting us know that possible brother John remained in Maine.
On 3 Aug 1784, 100 acres farm lots were granted and David Dailey received his in St Patrick division surrounding Bobabec Cove, about 7 miles north of St Andrews.10
On 30 July 1785 David and Mehitable "Dailey" of Saint Andrews sold Lot #18 to James Turner. The tract was "situated near the head of Passamaquoddy Bay bounded...on the North easterlyside by James Turner aforesaid and being Lot no. Eighteen in the Penobscot Association and running on said North easterly line at North westerly Course 50 rods thence a South westerly course fifty rods thence a South easterly course to said Bay thence up said Bay to the first mentioned bounds and contains one hundred acres." The notation: "To be paid in lumber by the twentieth" followed signatures. David Daley signed his name, and Mehitable's signature was an "X", her mark.11
Children of David2 Daley and Mehitable Webber all born at Maine were as follows:
-
3. i. JOSEPH3 was born between 1756 and 1760. He married Abigail Hammond, daughter of Zebedee Hammond and Martha Bennett, before 1801. He died before 1851.
-
ii. MARY was born between 1756 and 1773.
-
iii. SARAH was born between 1756 and 1773.
-
iv. GEORGE was born between 1756 and 1773. He died after 1824 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
On 5 Feb 1824, many inhabitants of Red Head signed a petition asking Saint John to continue to support the repairing of bridges and roads in their area. Among the signatures on the document were George Daley, Joseph Daly and David Daley.12
Generation Three
3. JOSEPH3 DALEY (David2, John1) was born between 1756 and 1760 at Maine. He married Abigail Hammond, daughter of Zebedee Hammond and Martha Bennett, before 1801.7 He died before 1851 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
On a 10 June 1784 return of the families there, one David DAILEY was listed along with his wife Mehitable and four children, all over the age of 10: Mary, Sarah, Joseph and George. Joseph was present in Saint John in 1801 land records.
Joseph purchased land in 1801, lot #488, from Samuel Hewey. In 1806, a record shows Mary Ann Smith, widow & heir of George Smith, selling Lot #2 of 200 acres at Red Head, Saint John County to Henry Thomas. It was then occupied by Benjamin Mosely [Land record #1454]. On 25 November 1806 [#1455], Henry and Abigail Thomas sold that same lot of land for 30 pounds to Joseph Dailey, mariner of Saint John [1804-1806, K1-S-1].
Deed #2151, within the county of Saint John, dated 21 September 1815, concerns a Joseph Daley of the parish of Portland, farmer, and his wife Abigail, selling a lot of land (full description undecipherable from the microfilmed record) to John Scott and wife Martha. It is mentioned that the lot was originally granted to George Smith, deceased, by the Crown. Further investigation was necessary to discover what lot this is and what future transactions were on this land.
Deed #6221 within Saint John County records has Joseph Dailey and wife Abigail of Portland sold to David Dailey for 150 pounds "western half of part of all that certain lot of land situated at or near Red Head in the County of Saint John"...originally a grant from the Crown to George Smith, then deceased. The lot was #200 and contained about 200 acres, and this transaction was dated 29 November 1821. There were other land records found involving both Joseph and Abigail Daley.7
An Indenture was made between Henry Thomas, and his wife Abigail, and Joseph Daily, mariner, for land situated in or near Red Head, consisting of roughly 200 acres for £30. The land was Lot #2, and was originally granted to George Smith, now deceased.13
On 21 Sep 1815, Joseph Daley and wife, Abigail,of Portland Parish, sold 200 acres in Lot #2, in or at Red Head to Martha Scott, widow and John Scott of Saint John for £100.14 On 10 Jun 1819, Moses Scott, cooper, sold land in Lot #513, on the east side of Saint John Harbour, to Joseph "Dayley" for £50.15
On 2 Aug 1819, Joseph and Abigail Daley sold a lot of land, designated as Lot #513, to George thompson. It consisted of about 40' across the front and 100' deep.16
David Dailey and wife Abigail of Portland Parish sold land to son David Dailey on 29 Nov 1821 for £150. The land was the western half of a lot in or near Red Head, orginally granted to George Smith, known as Lot #2 of about 200 acres. It is bound on the west by the Bay of Saint John, the north by Lot #1, granted to John Walker, and to the south by Lot #3 granted to John Steit(?).17 On 5 Feb 1824, many inhabitants of Red Head signed a petition asking Saint John to continue to support the repairing of bridges and roads in their area. Among the signatures on the document were George Daley, Joseph Daly and David Daley.12
On 1 May 1832, David and Abigail Daly [sic] of Portland, and Ptolemy and Patience Lombard of same, sold three lots of land, located in Saint Andrews, known as Lots #1, 2 and 3 in Morris's Division, Letter G, being the same lots conveyed to Zebedee Hammond in his lifetime of Saint Andrews. They were his heirs, and sold the land for £35 16s and 8 p to Gilbert Ruggles, also of Saint Andrews.18
Children of Joseph3 Daley and Abigail Hammond were as follows:

He married Sarah Stanley, daughter of Job Stanley and Isabella Dyer, on 20 Dec 1821 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. He died on 19 Jun 1876 at Portland, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; His obituary reads, "In Portland, on Monday, 19th inst, after a short illness, David Daly(sic), aged 75 years, leaving a wife and large family to mourn their loss. Funeral on Weds. the 21st at 2 PM from his late residence near the Marsh Bridge".19 He was buried on 21 Jun 1876 at Church of England Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
Among the signatures on the document were George Daley, Joseph Daly and David Daley.12 He appeared on the census of 1871 at Portland Parish, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; David "Daly", 70, born New Brunswick, and wife Sarah, 68, b. US , along with daughter Patience, then aged 49, are found within the 1871 census records for Portland Parish, Saint John County. They were all listed as Baptist, and while Sarah was listed as of English origin, both David and daughter Patience were listed as Irish.

His burial permit states his father was Solomon Stanley, born Ireland, and that Andrew was a fireman and resided King Street, W. Saint John.23 He was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.23
The marriage record of Andrew Stanley and his 2nd wife Mary Ann Burns shows William Daley and Sarah M. Turner as witnesses. This writer believes that William Daley was Andrew's step brother, the son of Henry Daley and Sarah Cronk.
Burial permit #373 lists that Andrew Stanley was a fireman and lived on King Street [West End]. He apparently died from pneumonia, and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery with other Stanleys. While his father is listed as having been Solomon Stanley, it also lists his birthplace as Ireland, which should be considered.
-

He died between 1849 and 1851 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick; Henry was not present in the 1851 census, and widow Sarah, sons David and William and mother Abigail were living with Solomon Stanley.27
In land records, #19618 registered on 31 May 1851, there was a transaction whereas Henry Daily of the parish of Simonds, did sell and transfer land "sold by my father Joseph Daily to James Smith, shipbuilder, deeded to me by said James Smith for the benefit of my self to assist in supporting my father and mother Joseph Daily and Abigail Daily". The original document was dated 5 April 1848, and not registered until 1851, which is likely to have been the approximate time that Henry Daley died.28
Children of Henry4 Daley and Sarah Cronk were as follows:
-
i. HARRIET57 was born circa 1832 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She married Solomon Stanley Jr, son of Solomon Dyer Stanley and Martha Bennett Daley, on 10 Nov 1851 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.29 She died on 13 Aug 1856 at near Partridge Island, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; "On Wednesday afternoon, two women named Harriet Stanly and Margaret Daly were going company with Joseph Whelpley, Charles Magee and a boy in a small boat from Saint John to their home near Mispeck and when near Partridge Island, the boat was upset and the two women were drowned. The men and boy were saved. The deceased were sisters.".30
-
ii. MARGARET31 was born between 1832 and 1838 at Saint John Co, New Brunswick; This writer feels she must have been close in age to Harriet, as they were both referred to as women in 1856.
There is no proof that Margaret and Harriet were children of Henry Daley, but Henry married in 1832, and there are no children to attribute to that marriage from 1832-1845. It is also possible they could be daughters of David Daley and Sarah Stanley.30 She died on 13 Aug 1856 at near Partridge Island, Saint John Co, New Brunswick; "On Wednesday afternoon, two women named Harriet Stanly and Margaret Daly were going company with Joseph Whelpley, Charles Magee and a boy in a small boat from Saint John to their home near Mispeck and when near Partridge Island, the boat was upset and the two women were drowned. The men and boy were saved. The deceased were sisters".30
