Ancestors of Samuel Covey

Generation One

1. Samuel1 COVEY was born before 1755. He married Susanna (--?--). He died on 29 Jan 1822 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont.1 He was buried on 31 Jan 1822.2
At this point we have no conclusive evidence indicating who Samuel Covey's parents were. We can only imagine that he is descended from the Coveys of CT and RI. The most logical family would be that of James Covey and wife Sarah Lamphere. They had several sons born before and after 1720, any one of whom might be the father of our Samuel. One, born in 1721, was even named Samuel. Nothing more on him is known.

Several Covey families ended up in Dutchess County, New York, and from Samuel Covey's Memorial on file at the Public Archives of Canada [A.O. 13, Series II (MG 14), Reel B-2446, Vol 81, pg 54.], we know that Samuel Covey was living at Fort Ann of Albany County (now Washington) when he was forced to abandon his home. At the time he filed, he was a resident of Caldwell's Manor.

Samuel Covey lost 100 acres of land under Governor Skene which had been under improvements, a cow and 2 calves, 2 horses, some tools, leather and skins, 10 acres of wheat, and two silver spoons. He was obviously not a wealthy man. His total loss came to 90 pounds York currency.

Military records in the W.O. 28 series at PAC also held references to our Samuel Covey. Within a Return of Royalists not incorporated in any corps for 1777 shows Samuel Covey's family as 1 male, 1 female and 1 child for a total of three, lodged at St Therese, having arrived from Fort Ann 22 November 1777. A later listing of Royalists taken Christmas Day, 1777 shows the family of three still quartered at St Therese. There is also an entry under "Return of Protestant Inhabitants in the District of Montreal" that Elizabeth Covey died 15 Sept 1777, buried the 16th. Was this Samuel's first wife? Or could it be an infant daughter? No further information available at this point - the handwriting was difficult to discern - it may be Corey.

The 1790 census shows Samuel Covey in two places: Alburgh, Vermont and Champlain, NY. It appears that many enumerated with Champlain were actually Alburgh residents. The Alburgh census was taken in 1791 and shows his family to consist of three males, 16 and up; two males under 16, and three females. The Champlain one shows 1-2-3.

A listing dated 1794 (but known to have been compiled about 1786) [referenced in Allen Stratton's History of Alburgh, Vermont] lists Samuel Covey living "north of ye Line", referring to boundary. In 1774, Alburgh was actually part of Caldwell's Manor, so many of the first settlers there had been given British grants to land there. When Vermont became a state in 1781, many settlers found themselves on American soil.

There are few documents offering us insight on Samuel Covey and his family. There was an article of agreement dated 24 Oct 1817 in Alburgh, Vermont records which shows that Samuel Covey gave his son Walter Covey all his moveable possessions except a horse, a gun and a bed so long as Walter agreed to support Samuel and his family and pay all his debts. On 19 October 1818 the document was destroyed by agreement of both parties.

His Last Will and Testament is on file at the Grand Isle County Courthouse at North Hero, Vermont. [Bk 4, p. 107-111], and lists his children. It also references an agreement he made with John Marvin Kelly, husband of daughter Elizabeth, who was to care for his 106 acres land in Lot 2 in the First Range in Alburg, and was to raise his five minor children for the next eight years (or until each came of age). At the expiration of the eight years, the land was to go to Samuel's son George. In July of 1822, there is an agreement between Marvin John Kelly and Walter W. Covey whereas John Kelly gives up rights to the land unto Walter Covey after the expiration of only one year. He was to keep several items in the original agreement, including a cow and a plow, and was entitled to the upcoming season's grain harvest.3,4 He Chesterfield, New Hampshire records show a Joseph Covey present there in 1770 and another entry shows Samuel Covey and wife Mary had a son Samuel Jr, b. 3 Jun 1773. This writer believes that this was our Samuel as well as his firstborn son Samuel. Jr. It is likely the Joseph listed is the same Joseph Covey who ended up in Windham Co, Vermont, having married Theodosia Hooker about 1772.5

Susanna (--?--) died on 2 Aug 1821 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont.6 She was buried on 3 Aug 1821.
Children of Samuel1 Covey and Susanna (--?--) were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Samuel2 COVEY Jr. (Samuel1) was born circa 1772 at Connecticut.7 He married Permelia Burr. He died after 18 Jun 1860.8
According to "The History of Huntingdon, Chateaugay and Beauharnois" by Robert Sellar, 1888, Samuel Covey Jr was a cooper by trade, and made wooden bowls and dishes when he wasn't out hunting moose and bear.
He supposedly moved to "La Tortue" for a year from Covey Hill before Clarenceville, and then back. It is said he was a guide in Prevost's expedition to Plattsburgh in 1812, but by 1830 he had moved back to Franklin to be near his brothers, Enos, James and Archibald. He resided on First Range, Lot 51, in Franklin Centre.
This writer finds it interesting that the History of Chesterfield, NH shows a Joseph Covey of that town was there in 1770. Another entry shows a Samuel Covey and wife Mary, had a son born there 3 June 1773.

There has been nothing else found on this Samuel and Mary. Is it possible that Mary is Samuel's first wife who gave birth to Sam Jr, in 1773? This would also connect our line up with that of Joseph Covey, who married Theodosia Hooker and resided Acton, Vermont later.

While Samuel Jr is shown to be born CT in the 1860 census, and we know that his father was in Fort Anne in 1777, is it possible that they resided New Hampshire for a few years before going to Fort Anne? If not, who is this mysterious Samuel Covey and wife Mary, who had Samuel Jr in 1773? Perhaps Samuel Jr named his first daughter Mary after his mother?9 He On 13 May 1813, Samuel Covey, Jr., his wife and family were summoned to depart town, along with other Alburgh residents. In these situations, if the persons were actually served with the warrant, and the family remained, the town had terminated any responsibility for providing for their support, no matter how destitute. During these times, small towns could not assume the financial burden of caring for those who could not care for themselves.10 According to Sellar's history, Samuel Covey Jr died at his son John's home in Gananoque, Ontario at the age of 86 years, and his wife Pamelia died the next year. No evidence can be found as yet to support this, and both Samuel Covey Jr. and Pamelia were listed in the 1860 census of Alburgh, Vermont. Samuel was listed as aged 88 years at that time. He appeared on the census of 18 Jun 1860 at Alburgh, Grand Isle Co, Vermont; Samuel Covey was aged 88, born CT, his wife Permelia, 82, born NY and they were living with their son Daniel Covey, then 55 and his Polly and their family.11

In the 1825 census, Archibald Covey was shown to have a family of eleven then living at Russelltown, Quebec.

Susanna HALL was born at New York; Her son Gilbert Y. Covey's death certificate indicates Albany, NY for her place of birth. She died in Oct 1851; Eaton Free-Will Baptist Church. She was buried on 19 Oct 1851; Eaton Free-Will Baptist Church. There were alot of Halls in the Noyan area, so it is more likely that Susanna was a Hall rather than a Hale. Until I locate further evidence, I shall leave it with both names being referenced.
Children of Archibald2 Covey and Susanna Hall were as follows:

7. Lydia Ann2 COVEY (Samuel1) was born on 23 Oct 1786 at Vermont. She married Johannes Young, son of Jacob Young and Catherina Brust, circa 1805. She died on 1 May 1864 at Noyan, Missisquoi Co, Quebec, at age 77.36 She was buried on 2 May 1864.

Batiste MINOR. The only record this writer has found concerning the family of Batiste Minor was the baptism of his child in 1815. He was noted as of Christie's Manor. However, a record for a baptism for a daughter, Mary, was found in 1812 with parents being John and Charlotte Minard. Witnesses were Youngs. I feel positive this is the same family.48 As of 29 Jan 1813, he was also known as John Minard.49
Children of Charlotte2 Covey and Batiste Minor were as follows:

According to the book "The Earl Covey Story", by Frances Alden Covey, George Covey moved from Alburg, Vermont to New York after his barn had been burned by a raiding party from across the Canadian border. Supposedly George and wife Nancy first lived in St Lawrence County, New York, before moving to Croghan, Lewis County. George Covey was a blacksmith by trade, and so was his son Henry.
Mary Cahilly tells that the 1865 census for NY indicates that Nancy was the mother of eleven children. " The lists of Civil War units from Croghan, (NY 10th Heavy Artillery, Co. D), enlisted 7/28/62, there is an Albert Covey, 21, died 1863; Charles Covey 29, died 1864, and George 18, died 1904. They could possibly be some of Nancy's sons." To illustrate how prevelent it was, as well as question its quality, the article told of how Elisha Covey, in 1872, "was found dead near his home some four days after he had been missing. He had been last seen buying a quart of firewater at McCoy's Store at the Frontier Lines."
