Ancestors of Daniel Belding
Generation One
1. Daniel1
BELDING was born on 29 May 1754 at New Haven, New Haven Co, Connecticut.1
He was born on 29 May 1760.2
He married Mabel Bristall, daughter of David
Bristol and Mabel Thomas. He died on 8 Dec 1846 at Chance Harbor,
Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 92; The announcement appeared in the newspaper
as John Beldon, aged 86, "Came to this country one year after landing of the Loyalists,
many years ship master out of this port, member of established church, left aged
widow."3
He was buried at Graveyard Point, Chance Harbor, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.4
It is highly likely that Daniel Belding was the youngest son of Jared Belding
b. c1716 and his wife Dinah Thomas of New Haven, Connecticut. Their children are
listed as Dinah, b. 1748, Mary b. 1750, Martha b. 1753, and two sons, Jared and
Samuel, both who died in December 1778 on Long Island while with the British army.
There are no birth dates for these sons, and where the information was found that
they died is not known as it was not sources within the family history found within
the history of New Haven.
The Thomas family also went to Saint John County settling not far away from the Belding family. The other clue was that Jared Sr had two sons named Jared and Samuel who were lost during the war, and Daniel named his two sons the same.
While only the conclusion of this writer, I shall add Daniel as son of Jared Belding.
Daniel was listed as being part of the Royal Artillery of Saint John on 4 May
1793" - from Generations", New Brunswick Genealogical Society, Issue 19, March
1984, p. 38.5
The family lived on St. James Street in Saint John until 7 September 1807 when
he sold the property to William Godsoe for £100, and removed to Chance Harbour.
[Saint John Land Deed 1478]. Daniel erected his house by a cove, later called
Old Place Cove. Daniel worked as a pilot and from this point of land he watched
for sailing ships bound for Saint John, putting out from there to guide them safely
into the harbour. His account book dated 1797 show he received fees for his pilot
service as well as bringing home supplies from Saint John. It also showed he traded
fish and lobsters. Some of the old stones from his fireplace, and a few collapsed
walls are all that remain of his house. His next house was bigger and built on
Outside Hill, near a creek.
This creek became known as Belding's Creek for three generations - and since then
as Thompson's Creek. In 1956 this property was owned by Hazen Thompson (5th generation
descendant) and Harry Shaw.[Most of this info was taken from "The Tides of Discipline"
by Ethel Thompson, 1978.].6
Daniel Belding joined the militia of the New Brunswick Regiment in 1809 in advance
of the scare that led to the War of 1812. He appears on the muster list of Menzies
Company in which he served.7
On 27 July 1819, Daniel Belding and Samuel Belding petitioned the Crown for Lots
25, 26, 27 and 28 in Little Dipper Harbour. The document states "That your petitioner
Daniel Belding is a Loyal refugee born in the now United States of America and
came to the Province at the peace of 1783. That he is married and has five children,
one of whom is the other Petitioner, Samuel Belding. That the said Samuel Belding,
thirty-one years of age, is unmarried and that neither of your Petitioners have
ever had any grant or allotment from the Crown in this Province." The document
continues to say that they had resided at Little Dipper Harbour for the past fourteen
years on land Daniel Belding had purchased from Charity French for thirty pounds.
The land had been a wilderness, and had since built a home, a barn, several "outhomes"
and had cleared and improved about 40 acres.
Mabel BRISTALL was born on 10 Aug 1763 at New Haven, New Haven
Co, Connecticut. She died on 29 Jan 1851 at Chance Harbour, Saint John Co, New
Brunswick, at age 87; "d. Chance Harbour, 29th ult., ...age 87, arrived with Loyalists
in 1783, left progeny of three generations."8
Mabel Bristall/Bristol is also a mystery, like her husband. Again, there is no
proof, but this writer finds it highly likely that Mabel is the daughter of David
Bristol b. 13 Jun 1742 at New Haven, Connecticut and his wife, Mabel Thomas, b.
20 Oct 1742 New Haven. Town records show that they had a daughter Mabel, who *died*
on 10 August 1763. We also know there was a close tie between the Thomas and Belding
families. Thomas Thomas, Loyalist from New Haven, CT appears to have ended up
in Mispec, dying there 8 July 1831. I do not have a full copy of the obit from
the NB Courier, 16 July 1831, but a correspondent wrote me that it said he arrived
in New Brunswick in 1783, and was aged 85 upon death. Apparently, he was a silversmith
from New York and arrived on the Hopewell with the June fleet of 1783, living
in Saint John for 40 years and then moved to Mispec where several members of his
family had previously settled. Thomas Thomas was born in New Haven as well. Felix
Thomas was buried next to Daniel Belding in Chance Harbour, and Felix was son
of Samuel Thomas who was a brother to Thomas Thomas.
Children of Daniel1 Belding and Mabel Bristall were as follows:
- + 2 i. Mabel2
BELDING, born 18 Dec 1783 at New Haven, New Haven Co, Connecticut; married
Alexander Hepburn.

BELDING was born on 3 Mar 1786 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
He was baptized on 3 Jul 1786 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick;
Baptised by Rev. Richard Samuel Clark, the first resident clergy of Gagetown,
NB, who was in Saint John by May 1786.9
He died after 1807.
He was a Freeman enumerated as "Gerrard Belding" in 1807 at Saint John, Saint
John Co, New Brunswick. According to notes written on the family history by
Frederick Thompson of Chance Harbour some years ago, Jared drowned at sea,
and was unmarried. Another note from a family member (name lost over the years)
indicates he married a Margaret Hepburn, but no proof has been found.
- 4 iii. Samuel

He died after 1819.
According to notes written on the family history by Frederick Thompson of
Chance Harbour some years ago, Samuel drowned at sea, and was unmarried. This
would have had to have been after 1819 when he signed the Petition to the
Crown for lands with his father, Daniel.

BELDING was born on 8 Aug 1790 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
She died on 7 Oct 1791 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age
1.
Supposedly, Harriet died in 1791, but there is a marriage for a Harriet Belding
noted in Marriage Bonds on 18 Feb 1818 to a Thomas Maywell (seaman), "both
of Lancaster". Witnesses were Samuel Belding and J. McLarty. It seems as though
she lived or Daniel Beldiing had another daughter while in NB and named her
Harriet again. The only Samuel in that area was his son, born 1788.
- 6 v. Harriet
BELDING was born after 1791 at Saint John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick. She

at age 85; "d. Chance Harbour, 1st instant, David Belding, age 85. Brother Belding

David Belding's house was near the location of the present Baptist Church, with frontage on the west at Belding's Creek, and on the east by the harbour. In the next generation this land was divided between the Tiner and the Hargrove families.

Generation Four
23. Mary4
HEPBURN (Edmund3, Mabel2
Belding, Daniel1)
has also be reported to have been born 1824.93
She was born on 22 Feb 1827 at Musquash, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.94
She married Joseph Daley, son of David Daley
and Sarah Stanley, circa 1860. She died on 5 Oct 1919 at Saint
John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick, at age 92; "Mary Daley died of cerebral haemorrhage
[sic] ". - this from the Methodist Cemetery records. Maiden name listed as Hebbern.95
She was buried on 7 Oct 1919 at Methodist Burying Ground, Saint John, Saint John
Co, New Brunswick; She was reinterred on 16 Sep 1947 at Fernhill Cemetery, Saint
John, Saint John Co, New Brunswick.
Mary's obituary in the Saint John Globe dated Monday, 6 October 1919 tells that
she died Sunday at the home of her son Henry Daley on Westmorland Road. She was
born at Musquash. Records held by the Wesleyan Methodist Cemetery on Thorne Avenue,
Saint John confirm her birth at Musquash as well as tell us that her father was
Edmund "Hebbern" born in Ireland. For many years no sign of a Edmund Hepburn was
uncovered.
Descendants of Alexander Hepburn who was supposedly born in Scotland all tell
tales about "Aunt" Mary Daley. This writer began to think it was all a mistake
and Mary had been a daughter of Alexander Hepburn after all. Then a passage was
found in the book "The Sound of Many Waters " by Ethel Thompson [1980] which said
that Edmund Hepburn who had come from Ireland had settled in Musquash in an area
which became known as Hepburn's Basin. No further mention was made of him. I tried
to reach the author, but to no avail. So the question is - how does Edmund Hepburn
fit in? Is he another son of Alexander? Who was his wife? Other children besides
Mary? With only two mentions of him - the book and her burial permit, did he die
early and she was raised with Charles Hepburn and siblings? Or was Alexander actually
Alexander Edmund?
